Good Points: - fucking great tone - tons of bass, tons of treble - this pedal is gain city - cheap as hell

I'm mostly comparing this pedal to the full Metal Muff with top boost. For both I used an amp set at the same volume level, same input, and both pedals with all knobs set at max. This pedal has on its side a good bit more shrill (even a healthy amount of natural shrill with an unplugged cable feeding into it). While the Metal Muff has a more roomy and hollow roar, this pedal features a true piercing high. The distortion is not so much a pure steady effect as it is a grating and noisy crunch fading into a nice whine. Compared to the actual housing and hardware of the Metal Muff, it unfortunately looses. The pedal is plastic and on the pedal I picked up used, it seems to not be very responsive or reliable. Knobs feel stubbornly slow preventing much in terms of quick sound blasts. The Metal Muff, however, has much looser knobs and remains superior for quick noise alteration. The metal housing of the DOD is great, featuring a full no slip base, unique yet unobtrusive design (on the red and black version) and a small footprint saving space on pedal boards. Overall, the DOD is the true noise pedal. The distortion while not really much more effective than the Metal Muff, features subtle background noises and much more straightforward shrill. The Metal Muff would probably be best reserved for when you need yet more highs (especially hollow ones) or throaty lows in quick bursts. If price is your only consideration, this pedal can usually be picked up for around - on eBay used so I would assume it's the more affordable of the two.
Good Points: -Twisting of level knobs gives great bursts of unique sound -Tough metal housing -While not truly more distortion, it produces amazingly rich background textures -Great price for the quality of noise produced
Bad Points: -Knobs have are tough to turn quickly -Plastic foot pedal -Only really available used so buy carefully

everything has already been said. this pedal is perfect for blasted walls of harsh Noise with a capital N. don't think twice if you find one, just buy it. you'll love it, i guarantee it.
Good Points: + it's loud. like, loud. + superb EQ + array of possible super brutal distortion sounds
Bad Points: - kind of common in people's setups - not all other effects are as loud as this - avoid the Digitech reissue

This is not your subtle mildly useful for noise boss distortion.This is a demon contained in a small box.Inflict nasaly ear ruining highs and low low lows.You can perform entire sets with just this pedal and a contact mic or a normel mic.
Good Points: Gritty. LOUD.(great for amping up quiet signals) Wonderful ''EEEE" potential. retardedly awesome knob names.
Bad Points: its LOUD, if this is at the end of your chain going into a computer or a P.A....BE CAREFUL!! this thing can ruin shit and clip like a motherfucker.Also, it will make you feel like a lame-o for owning the same pedal as everyone else,ever.Buy a behringer mixer and some analog delays and you could be generic noise artist #5435345563.

it's all been said but i just wanted to add this. i have both this pedal and the Digitech version, I have to say I like the DOD distortion over the Digitech one. It seems a little more vile and abrasive than the Digitech. That and it looks cooler than the Digitech DM.

This is an unique distortion pedal - the most fucking ROTTEN and nasty out of there. Heavy bass, painfull middle and scratchy high. Perfect for noise.

damn this is nasty. Very noisy, very loud and capable of some very brutal sound. Just plugged a contact mic into this and it went crazy. The eq is pretty good and the effect of each setting can be well heard at all times. Also it looks cool.

This is the pedal you want to beef up any noise or power electronic set.Pure 100% power distortion that crushes kids on bikes!
Good Points: The best thing about this pedal is the loudness it provides..this thing will destroy speakers and every ear that witnesses its power!
Bad Points: The only thing I don't like about this or anyother pedal is that it sucks the life out of 9v batteries really fast,I would advise you to get a wall wort unless you love shelling out cash for batteries!

rough sounding pedal. 3 band control(low mid high) is really useful. the distortion is really harsh but is great for low rumbles and piercing highs. very noisy useful distortion.

This is definitely a vicious sucker. Even at minimal level, it's capable of spitting out nasty sounds, and turned way up it's just deafening. I'm a big fan of anything that gives me control over EQ, so I abuse this bigtime, and it's actually very responsive in that respect. The bass is particularly awesome, capable of getting a really rough rumbling going. And the mid-high EQ can get some real piercing feedback, especially when running a microphone into this thing.
Good Points: nice high level gain, excellent & versatile three-band EQ, variety of sounds, very harsh, fairly cheap.
Bad Points: none, really.

this can be a nice little beast. it has a pretty good range, especially when tweeking the mid in a feedback loop, though i prefer the eq of the boss mt2 ofr direct processing. unfortunately, after you've played with this thing a while it all begins to sound the same. one great thing about this is that it will really add some howl to a contact mic, which is primarily what i use it for.

There's not much that hasn't been said about this pedal. A great distortion for noise. When you put it before an envelope filter you can "play" the filter with the death metal's volume control a lot more fluidly than with other distortions. It makes vocals sound like giants are making them, and the bass it generates is very nice. One thing, and people might disagree, but it's just not loud enough to use as the final distortion in a chain.

Bad Points: I hate having the word "metal" on my gear, and the cute names for volume controls met the sharpie quickly

One of those classic resources to provide the needed amount of feedback in your chain. Nice EQ, although it initially disappointed me compared with the EQ section of another usual pedal: the Boss MT-2. Anyway, comparing prices, this is a more than reasonable purchase and fairly versatile if you learn how to use it and where to place it... Just be sure to avoid that characteristic common sound of it.
Good Points: Ideal for creating giantic walls of noise, heavily constructed and cheap.
Bad Points: Somewhat heavy in its weight and a muddy sound that may be not always that convinient; nothing serious, though.

I recommend this pedal HIGHLY in a noise chain! The distortion is absolutely SICK and there is a lot to tweak in the eq dept. The PAIN knob (mids) is the best feature, next to the 'full-on/always on' distortion you get with this. If you are new to noise experimentation, THIS is the pedal to start off with!
Good Points: sturdy DOD construction, 3 band eq, distortion 'always on', readily available and pretty inexpensive

so i fonally broke down and joined the rest of the crowd...when i first tried this guy out i wasnt very impressed, and didnt see what it had over my american metal or metal maniacs...save for a decent amount of weirdness coming from it due to its excellent eq section...where this really shined through was when i moved it more to the front of the chain, i could dial in some nice harsh clanging that deffinately made it worth the bling i forked over for it...deffinately better than the boss metal zones...
Good Points: the eq section gives it all the range over any other dod metal specified pedal has a newer dod door so it wont get lost raspy loud interesting sounds when thrown in the middle of the chain...

A distortion that can self oscillate or absolutely destroy your speakers if you place it near the end of a chain. I'm thinking of getting a second one to havce both. In combination with the Frostwave Sonic Alienator this can be damn near fatal. I use it with almost all the controls up all the way and sweep the pain (mid) back and forth for some great dynamic tones.
Good Points: It boosts the signal ten times louder than the original.

Got to try this pedal out at a friend's apt. with just contact-mic'd sheet metal run through a small Berhinger mixer, and gotta say this thing roars... and squeals, and hisses, and just about does any other harsh noise distortion moves you could possibly imagine. It has three seperate tone controls for adjustment of low, mid, and high, which are the keys to the variety of sound available in this unit... that and the massive amount of pure distortion contained within. Looking to snag one for myself for further experimentation.
Good Points: More distortion contained within than you could possibly nees, individual tone controls for low, midrange, and high.
Bad Points: Some have labeled it the standard sound for every run-of-the-mill noise artist, but this should be taken as a challenge and not a limitation.

i use the death metal at the beginning of my effects chain and i go into a whammy, chorus, fuzz, envelope, flanger the death metal really brings out every detail of the other pedals, it is just loud and relentless.
Good Points: very loud, the bass is pretty powerful and the highs get the job done.

I got this after reading the reviews below and I can only agree in the praise of this mighty pedal. In my opinion this is better than DOD Grunge and Boss MT-2 if you want to have distortion that really harshens your noise. I use this at the beginning of a noise chain with just a cord plugged in. By turning the knobs I get a great variety of sounds and frequensies to work with in the chain. This is essential and I consider getting one more of these babies.
Good Points: Great looking. Great distortion. Can do great sweeps. Great period.
Bad Points: The name is a bit silly...

I swear this pedal is just nasty, can easy distort any sound in a great way. Great for vocals(if you want that buried sound) to contact'd metal, glass, etc. Has a great hot signal to boot.

One of my favorite pedals to use as a sound source. With the "Guts" knob set below 12 o'clock, and the "Scream" knob maxed this thing creates wonderful chirping feedback mess. It creates a massive ammount of feedback all by itself whenever it's engaged. The quality of the distortion is a little run of the mill, but the gain and the feedback make it all worth it. All this, and you can get htem for next to nothing. A must have...
Good Points: Great sound source all by itself. Cheap. Common. Loud as hell.
Bad Points: Distortion is a bit typical.

noisy, fuzzy, gritty, mean and abusive distortion with a nice paint job. more scream and grit than any other distortion i've used, save perhaps a noiseswash. as far as DOD distortion goes, this is the best overall, though i use my grunge a little more often htan this for adding some meat to the sound. moderation is key with this thing.. don't go turnin' it to 11 just because you can - unless of course that's the effect you want.
Good Points: nice red & black paint job, even better distortion that can really crunch. it cranks.
Bad Points: it can utterly destroy all semblance of the source sound, if you consider that a bad thing.

one of the best distortion pedals on the market. harsh as you get. its one of the most important pieces in my set-up. you can get anything from subtle distortion to full-on insanity. with names like guts, pain, and scream, you can't go wrong with this one. must have

This thing couldn't be cooler. I know folks don't like DOD pedals 'cause they sound like ass, but with noise that's the whole point :-P Using little more than a cheap mic, this black-n-red beauty, and a tiny mixer you can create earsplitting noise. If you have only one aux send, hook it up to this!!
Good Points: Sturdy despite plastic body. Nice knobs, pretty sensitive, and noisy like nobody's business..
Bad Points: None, as long as noise is your goal (it's too dirty for anything else, but who cares??!).
