Metasonix Agonizer TX-1

Metasonix Agonizer TX-1

Most people who have tried this agreed that the Agonizer sounded ugly, was weird, and sucked. The creator of this device has worked long and hard, doing some final tweaking to the circuitry to make certain that this thing sounded as thoroughly disgusting as possible. Ripping distortion that changes character depending on how and what you hit it with.

  • i use this to destroy a bass synth pretty much. i gottta love/ hate issue with this pedal. i've used pedals that wreck shit as much as this does. more a collectors item than anything else. oh yeah the level kinda works in reverse.

  • Just got this today and have used it with my studio noise "rig" only processing a couple different modified sounds from a Yamaha DX100 FM synth module run through the Agonizer. First off, this thing is fucking LOUD, as a matter of fact both when the effect is engaged AND bypassed... so either not true bypass, or possibly something wrong with the switching. As for sound itself, it can go from actually sounding kind of smoothly overdriven at lower settings of all the controls to crapped-out formless sludge with everything turned up. THe "Suckbass" switch does just that, sucks all the bass from you signal, and help eliminate some of the hum. There's a small range on the "Strangle" control just above the midpoint which when turned quickly will add something of a momentary filter-sweep type sound, just completely distorted and nasty. Despite all the Metasonix vitriol regarding guitartists, this thing actually sounds pretty good with that particular instrument, probably better suited to sounds with a sharp attack and short decay as opposed to the usual steady roar of most noise or PE. I believe a good set-up for the Agonizer would be to isolate it from the rest of your effects chain by placing it in the loop of something like the DOD Loop/Gate or Boss Line Selector and drop it in when needed and then cut it out completely when you don't.
  • Good Points: loud, can get really crapped --out fuzz/distortion, loud
  • Bad Points: pretty expensive for what it does, loud-assed hum when bypassed, but I there are ways to get around that problem
