Korg MS-10

Korg MS-10

The Korg MS-10 was a monophonic single-VCO analog synthesizer. The MS-10 was really a powerful mono-synth with a patchbay, lots of knobs and a keyboard control. It also was CV/Gate controllable. It had an external input to filter which allowed filtering of external sound sources. The MS-10 was also good for creating bassy and percussive sounds.

  • Great analogue tones, a filter section that can easily be pushed into self-oscillation and a very useful patching section with independent pink and white noise generators. Fantastic for noise/drones.
  • Good Points: Pretty much everything.
  • Bad Points: The price.
  • Price Paid: US$250.00
  • Purchased At: Early 90's at EMIS Music

  • ms-10 is the necessity of life. this toy is by far the most interesting thing of the 20th century. I bought it broken and had a piece and the audio output fixed and the power cord replaced and two keys replaced and this thing is more than alive!
  • Good Points: Very awesome
  • Bad Points: neighbors are stupid
  • Price Paid: US$392.00

  • like the person before me stated, it's incredible for throbbing power electronics stuff, and still useful for noise too. a knob for every function, so it's dead easy to use, and it's built like a tank. the filter screams, it has both white and pink noise generators, fast envelopes for more percussive sounds, and overall it just sounds great. and this is before even using it with any effects... and some delay and distortion and this thing will be an unstoppable noise machine.
  • Good Points: made of metal really simple the filter is incredible fast envelopes plenty of modulation options sounds great
  • Bad Points: it's old, so if something goes wrong, you're kind of screwed.
  • Price Paid: US$455.00
  • Purchased At: ebay

  • When I turn on my Korg, the first thing that comes to my mind is that, if you're looking for an analogue synth to emulate your European Power Electronics heroes, this is the choice: warm sound with a huge amount of possibilities to produce an impressive bunch of rhythmic buzzes with that clicking, humming sound. On the contrary, if you're into Harsh Noise without additives, this synth may be equally useful since its patchable quality offers a splendid range of textures to discover and to keep it exciting for a long time. The MS-10 features a Voltage Control Oscillator, Voltage Controlled Low Pass Filter, Voltage Controlled Amplifier, Envelope Generator, Low Frequency Oscillator (Modulation Generator), Slew Limiter (Portamento), Noise Generator and External Input. So yes, let's say that you'll have fun playing with your cables to connect this with that; sure. And what's more, filter it through some pedals, or just place it in the middle of your chain and, voila, the chances become endless.
  • Good Points: Incredibly versatile and useful for Noise, Power Electronics or any other Experimental genre; plus that fat, warm analogue sound.
  • Bad Points: Getting a decent unit, fully functional and affordable, is becoming a real challenge nowadays. Monophonic.

  • This for the MS-20, the MS-10's big brother--two <!> filters, external signal processor, ring modulator, sample & hold, more of a patch bay, extensive modulation, and so on. Awesome noise source: noise can be modulated at the source (LFO, filters, LFO'd filters, S&H), before any pedals get involved and two <!> feedback loops are possible: ESP and input to filters. Two EGs. A noise powerhouse.
  • Good Points: The MS-20 still generates a lot of interest on the net. Books like Devarahi's _Complete Guide to Synthesizers_ help understand and use all of its treasures. Very tweakable in real time. Looks mighty impressive with patch chords in use.
  • Bad Points: No memory. Traded mine in for a Waldorf Micro-Q and very little regret. The Korg MS-20 is very pricey due to the "vintage" analogue synth craze, a craze that is abating somewhat.

  • When it comes to analog synths, patchability is a must. The ability to change the order of the various internal modules, or insert modules from or all the modules from additional synths is where these things really shine. The LPF on this thing is legendary for very good reason -- lots of range, and very fat sounding. Great modulation options with controls for mixing between an external source or internal sounds. One advantage of the MS-10 over the MS-20 is the PWM. I get a lot of use out of mine as a sound source, as part of a chain or loop of effects and synths, and to process recorded audio.
  • Good Points: See review
  • Bad Points: Collectable status renders the price higher than it should be, but still worth it.

  • well, I'm a huge Korg fan, the ms-10 has patchability! and a great filter. Patch pinkish some noise to the PWM....love it! a great noise synth.
  • Good Points: Flexibility. PWM the ms20lacks this. I have MS20's but still the MS110 is essential
  • Bad Points: just one VCO. only a low pass filter.
