Akai Variwah W1

Akai Variwah W1

The Veriwah gives you a pedal wah and a touch wah in one unit. In Touch Wah mode, the threshold can be adjusted with the Touch Sensitivity knob, Attack Time adjusts speed of response, and Offset changes the range of wah filter movement. The pedal can be assigned to control depth, speed, threshold level and offset. In Pedal Wah mode, all controls are ignored and it functions as a conventional pedal wah. 9V power transformer included.

  • I'm a total sucker for autowah, so when I saw a pedal wah plus touch wah plus autowah for thirtytwo bucks I couldn't resist. As just a straight-up wah pedal it's kinda lacking, the range is not great, though fortunately for me it's more low-end than, say, a crybaby, though if you're looking for piercing high end this probably ain't your bag. You can use the pedal to modulate various parameters in the other modes from lfo speed to range, and it's velocity sensitive (you can control the trigger velocity with the pedal as well), so it's as a modulation source that this pedal really shines. It takes a little while to learn, but it pays off. I usually put this near the beginning of the chain, right after my bass synth wah, and between the two I can really shape a feedback loop or a synth drone. Definitely use a good quality power supply with this, and don't get it if all you're really looking for is a wah (check the Snarling Dogs wahs for that), but if you're looking for a good way to add some variation this is definitely a pedal worth looking at.
  • Good Points: Lots of possibilities for wah-style variation Really well built Great for autowah junkies Cheap (moron guitar players hate this thing)
  • Bad Points: Not an amazing straight wah Can be hard to get good results in a hurry
