I only have three letters for the Microcon. WOW!! I managed to snag a Microcon II (Midi version) for a nice price from ebay a long time back. Let's just say that I was really happy to have gotten this for the price. Using it alone using the trigger button, you can really get some freaky sounds, low bass rumblings to high pitched tinitus ridden squeels. The filter section even self oscillates which is very useful. My first set ever (Moribund) I left the microcon self oscillating, creating a nice siren affect while I went to get a drink of water. Everything on this unit is tweakable, but the best part is when you use it with a Midi Controller. This is where it really shines, I can fine tune any pitch that I can't get just using the unit as a standalone. The unit tracks fine to a midi sequence as well. I can't stress enough how thankful I received this unit, especially with the midi ability.
Good Points: The sound is amazing, roughly the size of a VHS tape, and lets not forget all the controls.
Bad Points: Nothing.

I was attracted to this thing because of the compact size, and it seemed to offer a ton of possibilities. The learning time is little-to-none, especially if you're already familiar with other analogue synths and signal processing (a/d/r, lfo, gate, etc). It's so easy to get a wide range of sounds from this thing that it feels like cheating somehow. At barely larger than a VHS tape, it packs a serious wallop with floor-rumbling bass and dogkilling highs. The filter self-oscillation is so nasty and nasal I can barely bring myself to jam it, but that's a good thing. A great price for these new, but shave off another hundred on the used market and you're really talking. Simple controls and thick sound make for a great synth! I've been using it more and more lately. It dropped (and bounced) 3ft on a concrete floor a while back and I thought it was a goner, but it turns out the crappy Radio Shack wallwart I was using died on me. Picked up a new adapter and the Microcon worked perfectly!
Good Points: Small, simple ANALOGUE synth. Cheap and reliable. Plenty of options and potential. Nice thick filter.
Bad Points: Not a bad thing about this one.

My first ever synth and also the smallest one available. A whole range of sounds can be created from this lovely piece of analog synth. You can create rhythmic stutters, sirens, rumbles and whatever else you fancy. It needs a sequencer or a drum machine to work in a good way although you can get it to self-oscillate if you hold down a small button. The only flaw about this one is that the sound is kind of on the weak side. I use an Effexon to give the sound some crunch but I guess you can use a distortion pedal as well to do the job. Can I recommend this? Well it is mainly for people who want to have control over their sound and therefore I think this suits power electronics fans best. You canÃÕ really create any noise chaos with it. As it is completely analog you canÃÕ save any presets so it takes some time shifting sound and hence cutup noise chaos is out of the question. The price is quite good for an analog synth but I would wait for the MicroKorg instead.
Good Points: Lots of stuff to tweak. Good price. Reliable. Small size. Easy to use and understand. Great customer support. Any fool can get this working.
Bad Points: Weak sound that needs some extra help from Effexon or distortion pedal.
