Electro Harmonix Bassballs

Electro Harmonix Bassballs

USA-MADE BASSBALLS twin dynamic ENVELOPE FOLLOWER. BASSBALLS uses two critically tuned, sweeping dynamic filters that respond sensitively to attack variations creating shifting peaks and notches to produce vowel-like overtones. The switchable Distortion mode%u2019s warm harmonic distortion intensifies the overtones and deep resonance of the effect. The Sensitivity control determines how sensitive the filters are to attack dynamics.

  • I'm surprised by the other reviews here, this was a staple for some of my best noisemaking .. the original version that is, which looked like this one except for the LED. I even wired the sensitivity to a rocker pedal. Rather noisey, adds a whooshing noise to everything, bad for straight bass but need I say more. Delight is acoustic feedback (w/instrument+distortion), other envelope followers probably similar but this still has the edge. This can be very chaotic, I was able to get self-envelope oscillation and the like.
  • Good Points: A more vocal follower.
  • Bad Points: Envelopes slow only esp. release. Built in distortion dry and ugly, YMMV.

  • See the Russian Bassballs review. Much the same gizmo here except that it seems a little more rugged. I prefer using two dedicated phasers, EQ and some kind of envelope follower--such as a noise gate--to duplicate the effect.
  • Good Points: Ok as an all-in one, weak envelope follower/shallow phasing pedal, for light wooshing noises. Has a booster that makes the effect and the original signal much louder.
  • Bad Points: A little passé for a pedal in this day & age.

  • Good for adding some phasing to moans and groans. Not much use by itself for noise but can help in a chain, if you need a weak envelope follower and some shallow phasing all-in one pedal. Has a booster that makes the effect and the original signal louder (much louder). Better to have something like two dedicated phasers, EQ and some kind of envelope follower--such as a noise gate--to duplicate the effect.
  • Good Points: Not too expensive. Cheaper than the US-built model. Cheaper than a BOSS phaser. Funny name; looks impressive and classy, but looks can be deceiving. Lightweight.
  • Bad Points: Looks and feels flimsier than the US-built model. No reference points on button. IN to power supply is not universal (à la BOSS). The volume gain doesn't add any character or distortion to the sound. No mounting hole underneath. Lightweight sound.

  • Personaly I think this thing sucks. It's very cheesy sounding, and not in a good way at all. Some people might like it but I dont see how. Not good for noise at all.
  • Good Points: It's cheap.
  • Bad Points: It's sound.
  • Price Paid: US$50.00

  • at first I thought this would be really cool, but when I finally tried it, I was dissapointed with it. It is ok as a 12db lowpass filter with drum or steccato bursts but nothing much else
  • Good Points: sensitivity knob, great for going from full filter to a sweep down to nothingness
  • Bad Points: Not too impressive as a stand alone pedal
